@HUTrackandField's Onuoha’s Hopes to Oregon Falls Short Despite New Personal Best

Onuoha ends sophomore campaign on a high note

TAMPA, Fla. (May 25, 2018) – Howard University sophomore hurdler Uchechi Onuoha set a new personal best at the NCAA Preliminary East Round Women's 400-meter Hurdle Quarterfinals but fell short in reaching Oregon for the championship round.

The Pennsylvania native ended her sophomore campaign on a high note, eclipsing a season-best 58.02.

Despite not reaching Eugene, Howard Director for Track and Field David Oliver was proud of Onuoha's performances in Tampa.

"It's really hard to progress," Director Oliver stated. "You have to be the best in the country [to move on]. Although she fell short, she's going to be ranked among the top 30 in the nation, which is a big accomplishment. I am very proud of her."

She placed sixth in her heat and 16th overall. To advance, the top 3 from each heat, followed by the next best three times, totaling 12 spots.

After running her two best races at the big stage, Director Oliver looks for his outstanding hurdler to take the next steps.

"She ran her two best races of the season [in Tampa]," Oliver added. "That's a sign of a great competitor, that's something you can't coach. She knows what it's going to take next year. We know what we have to do and we're going to go after it."
