COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 7, 2018) – Director of Track & Field
David Oliver and the Howard University Men's & Women's Track & Field team witnessed 15 Top-10 finishes, including four Top-3 performances at the Gamecock Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
The one-day event took place at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track in Columbia, S.C.
Sophomore
Uchechi Onuoha headlined the day with three Top-10 feats overall. Individually, the Pennsylvania product finished runner-up in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a 1:00.49 mark. She also registered a 14.01 time in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries, which was good for 10
th place. Both achievements earned her spots in the IC4A/ECAC Championships in May.
Junior
Aliyah Hale also competed in the 100-meter hurdles but placed fifth spots highest after clocking in at 1:02.23. She qualified for the IC4A/ECAC in Princeton, N.J. as well.
In the women's 4x400 relay, Hale and Onuoha, alongside sophomore
Sydney Benson and freshman
Ozoma Scott, took third with a 3:47.11 mark. The squad clinched a postseason berth at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Benson saw action in the women's 800-meter where she placed second overall (2:13.69).
Newcomer
Jessika Gbai carried over her momentum from last week with two Top-10 finishes. Independently, the Philadelphia native earned fifth in the women's 100-meter (12.18).
Gbai joined junior
Taleya Harris and fellow classmates
Meenah Saalih and
Adia Starnes in the 4x100 relay where the team claimed seventh (48.08) and secured a place at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Freshman
Destiny Stanford participated in the women's 1500-meter race and finished sixth overall with a 4:41.16 time.
In the women's field events, seniors
Dominique Cleggett and
Al'Moni Ellis competed in the long jump where both Bison placed in the top 10. Cleggett took fourth (5.69 meters) while the Virginia product earned 10
th (5.46 meters).
Newcomer
Rachel Edler placed second overall in the women's triple jump after leaping 12.01 meters (39'5"). As a result, she qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Senior
Cheyenne Bellerand threw 12.67 meters (41'7") and earned ninth in the shot put while junior
Lauryn Galloway took fifth in the javelin, tossing 37.76 meters (123'11").
For the men, senior
Mohamed Bah led the charge with a pair of Top-10 performances. Individually, the New York native competed in the 800-meter race where he took sixth (1:53.98). Furthermore, he clinched a spot in Princeton, N.J. at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Bah, along with juniors
Kenneth Chigbue and
Korey Lombard and freshman
Mekhi Closson earned a fourth-place finish after recording a 3:17.43 time. The squad also secured a postseason slot at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
