WASHINGTON (April 28, 2018) – Coach
Lauren McCoy and the Howard University Softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore. HU won game one, 3-1, and then rallied from an early deficit to win game two, 8-3.
In game one, redshirt junior
Mackenzi Steele tossed a gem as she went seven innings while tying a season-high nine strikeouts in the victory.
Offensively, the Bison produced three runs on six hits. Newcomer
Breanna Robinson registered her sixth multi-hit game, going 2-of-3 in the win.
HU took the early lead after a throwing error brought home redshirt freshman
Zaria Hall, 1-0.
In the fourth, sophomore
Kamryn Tillman scored on a wild pitch to extend Howard's advantage, 2-0.
Maryland Eastern Shore sliced the margin in half after scoring on an unearned run in the fifth, 2-1.
Top six, freshman
Kaylen Samuel sent a sac fly to left field, bringing home senior
Brooklyn Emory, 3-1.
In the nightcap, Howard exploded for eight runs on 12 hits. Emory led the attack, going a perfect 3-of-3 with two doubles and a walk in the victory.
Maryland Eastern Shore scored twice in the first to take the early lead, 2-0, but HU responded and tied the game in the third after a two-run single from freshman
Trinity Gibbs, 2-2.
Top four, Samuel gave Howard the go-ahead run with a sac fly to left, driving home fellow classmate
Alyssa Lavine, 3-2.
From that point, the Bison never looked back as they tallied two runs in the fifth and sixth to take a commanding 8-2 advantage after six.
Eastern Shore battled back with a run in the bottom half, but Howard kept the Hawks at bay, 8-3.
