FAIRFAX, Va. (April 14, 2018) – Coach
David Oliver and the Howard University Women's Track & Field team competed in the Mason Invitational, hosted by George Mason University, where they finished fifth overall after producing 58 points.
On the day, HU witnessed 13 Top 10 finishes, including five in the Top 3.
Sophomore
Uchechi Onuoha led the way with four Top 5 finishes.
Individually, the Pennsylvania native placed second in the women's 100 hurdles (14.11) and 400 hurdles (1:01.17) while scoring eight points in each event. Furthermore, Onuoha clinched spots for both races in the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Onuoha was a member of two relay squads who had Top 5 finishes: 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.
HU had two 4x100 relay teams compete in Fairfax. Onuoha joined newcomers
Jessika Gbai,
Zachyre Lynn Lane, and
Meenah Saalih where they took third overall with a 46.96 mark. As a result, the team earned a slot at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
The other squad consisted of sophomores
Queen Divine and
Nia Gilliam and freshmen
Adia Starnes and
Sydne Vanhorse. The four Bison finished seventh while scoring two points after clocking in at 49.29.
In the women's 4x400, Onouha and Starnes, along with junior
Aliyah Hale and newcomer
Ozioma Scott, earned fourth place with a 3:56.15 time and tallied five points for Howard.
Howard ran a second team in the women's 4x400 with Divine, senior
Aigner Bobbitt, sophomore
Alyssa Rischell, and freshman
Alexis Newberry. HU ended with a 4:09.22 mark, which was good for seventh overall while recording two points.
Other individual performances in the running events included Gbai with two Top 10 performances in the women's 100-meter (8
th) and 400-meter (4
th). Additionally, the Philadelphia product secured spots for both events at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Scott claimed third in the women's 400-meter after finishing with 56.83 time.
In the women's field events, senior
Dominique Cleggett had two Top 10 finishes: long jump and triple jump.
Cleggett leaped 5.74 meters (18'10") in the women's long jump and placed third overall. The New Orleans native took sixth in the triple jump after posting a 11.69 (38'4.25") mark.
Freshman
Rachel Edler, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Field Performer of the Week, also took part in the women's triple where she ended eighth overall (11.44 meters).
Junior
Lauryn Galloway competed in the women's javelin and tossed 36.20 meters (118'9"), which was good for sixth in the event.
