WASHINGTON (February 9, 2018) – Howard University Women's Tennis team picked up its first win of the season after edging out Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, at The Washington Tennis Education Foundation's (WTEF) East Capitol Campus.
Howard Head Coach
Larry Strickland missed today's contest as he traveled with the men's squad to Williamsburg, Va. where they took on SEC foe South Carolina in a neutral site match. HU Associate Head Coach
Nicholas Askew filled in for Coach Strickland.
HU's dominance in singles play made the biggest difference. Four Bison won their respective singles matches: juniors
Nicole Hutchison and
Kindha Nasef and freshmen
Nathalie Finch and
Yassmine Khiri.
Finch served as the Howard's top singles player where she rallied after dropping the opening set to Mount St. Mary's Alexa Quintanilla, 4-6. The Florida native won set two, 6-4, and then pulled away in the deciding set, 6-2.
Khiri, Hutchison, and Nasef each won their respective matches in straight sets without any trouble.
In doubles competition, The Mount took two-out-of-three with Howard's lone doubles victory coming from
Christina Joynes and
Aria Ragas, 6-4
HU has a quick turnaround as they will face James Madison at The WTEF East Capitol Campus Saturday (Feb. 10). Tip-off is set for noon.
