WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (January 28, 2018) – Coach
David Oliver and the Howard University Men's & Women's Track & Field teams excelled at the JDL College Dual Meet Madness in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Both 4x400 relay teams won their respective events.
The men's relay squad consisted of senior
Mohamed Bah, junior
Korey Lombard, and freshmen
Mekhi Closson and
Jordan Holder. HU easily won the race (3:24.14), finishing five seconds before second-place USC-Upstate (3:29.27).
The young women's relay team involved sophomore
Sydney Benson and freshmen
Adia Starnes,
Jessika Gbai, and
Destiny Stanford. Similar to the men, Howard cruise to victory (4:04.02) while finishing nine seconds better than Coker (4:13.59).
After qualifying for the IC4A/ECAC Championships, sophomore
Uchechi Onuoha won the 60-meter hurdles while breaking last week's mark by one-tenth of a second (8.62).
HU women dominated the 400-meter race, taking the top three spots. Senior
Aliyah Hale took home the crown with a 59.32 mark, followed by teammates
Oluchi Ike (1:00.82) and
Aigner Bobbitt (1:01.43), respectively.
Other notable Bison performances include the women's 800-meter where Benson (2:17.28) and Stanford (2:19.48) earned second and third, respectively.
Newcomer
Jessika Gbai had two top five finishes in the 60-meter (4
th; 7.86) and 200-meter (3
rd; 25.72).
In the field, seniors
Dominique Cleggett (triple jump) and
Cheyenne Bellerand (shot put) each placed fourth in their respective events.
On the men's side, Lombard finished third in the 200-meter with a 22.67 mark while Closson took fourth in the men's 400-meter race (51.23).
Freshman
Malik Kosanovich earned a fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter marathon (9:09.82).
