NEW YORK (January 12, 2018) – Coach
David Oliver and the Howard University Men's & Women's Track & Field teams displayed several strong performances at the inaugural HBCU Battle in New York City. The women finished second overall while the men placed seventh on the day.
"It was a great day," said Oliver. "We had a ton of student-athletes produce lifetime bests in their events."
On the women's side, freshman
Destiny Stanford and sophomore
Uchechi Onuoha each won their respective races. Stanford won the women's 3000 meters with a 10:51.29 mark while Onuoha claimed the top spot in the women's 60 hurdles (8.69). Onuoha also finished runner-up in the 200 meters (25.35).
Other notable performance on the track included freshman
Jessika Gbai placing third in the women's 60 meters with a 7.85 mark while sophomore
Sydney Benson took third in the women's mile (5:30.60).
In the field events, senior
Dominique Cleggett placed first in the women's long jump (5.68m) while fellow classmate
Al'Moni Ellis took third in the same contest (5.64m). Cleggett also earned a third-place finish in the triple jump (11.82m).
Junior
Mi-ah Watkins placed third in the women's weight throw after tossing more than 12 meters (12.15m).
For the men, senior
Mohamed Bah claimed the top spot in the men's mile with a 4:24.74 mark while fellow classmate
Milan Bullock won the high jump (1.98m).
Freshman
Anthony Gordon-Bester took second in the men's 800 meter (1:56.14).
Saturday (Jan. 20), the Bison travel to nearby College Park, Md., for the Terrapin Invitational, hosted by Maryland.
