NORFOLK, VA -- Howard University's Caylin Newton was named Rookie of the Week/Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Gerald Wright named Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week for their play this past weekend in their victory over UNLV. 

In his collegiate debut, Newton led Howard to its first-ever FBS win as he totaled 330 offensive yards. Newton rushed for 190 yards and passed for 140 yards including the go-ahead touchdown midway in the fourth quarter at UNLV. The win marked the second consecutive season a MEAC institution has defeated an FBS opponent.

"Caylin [Newton] has improved greatly since his arrival here at Howard," said Howard Football Head Coach Mike London. "Although a true freshman, he is quite a humble young man. His skill set has helped propel him to achievements on the field and he will only get better."

Wright led an offensive line which paved the way for 449 total offensive yards, including 309 on the ground. The Bison did not allow a sack through the contest.

"Gerald Wright is a charismatic leader and well respected by his teammates," London stated. "The players feed off his energy. He has performed well and we look forward to his senior leadership."

Tye Freeland snagged an honorable mention finishing second on the team with nine tackles and had a decisive forced fumble and fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Howard.

Howard looks to secure another victory this weekend when they travel to Kent, Ohio to take on FBS opponent Kent State University, Saturday at 3:30pm.
