Towson, MD---On Saturday the Howard track and field team competed at the Towson Invitational where there were many highlights. Among the dominating performances in the hurdle events, there were also great performances in the pole vault and javelin.
Freshman Mia Robinson broke the outdoor pole vault record and senior Rajae Gayle gained another victory in the men's javelin and continues to sit atop the MEAC rankings in the event. Freshman Oluchi Ike is also now sitting at the Number 1 spot in the MEAC in the 400-meter hurdles after winning the race at the Saturday meet, followed by teammate Uchechi Onuoha (Number 3). Onuoha, however, now holds the 100-meter hurdle record for the Towson Invitational with a winning time of 14.16.
Onuoha, who ran the 100-meter hurdle race for the first time in her collegiate career on Saturday, said, "I didn't see myself thinking to pursue the short hurdles at MEAC Championships, but now I will run them both with the hopes of medaling twice!"
Teammate Oluchi Ike is also new to running the 400-meter hurdles, prompting her to observe. "This is only my second year running the hurdles, so to have my first collegiate win and to be at the top of the conference as a freshman is very humbling."
Head Coach Marc Harrison, who also coaches the hurdles, is very proud of who he refers to as "the struggle buddies".
"Both ladies had huge PR's today and I'm happy for them to get the wins," he noted "Oluchi was due for a good race. Uche is beginning to realize how talented she really is. We are also anxious to see how Aliyah Hale bounces back from her hamstring injury when she returns to action next week in her quest for another medal at the Outdoor Championships."
Next week the Bison will travel to Baltimore, MD to compete at the Morgan State Legacy Invitational before gearing up for the annual Penn Relays (April 27-29).
