Richmond, Va. – The Howard University track and field team traveled down I-95 to compete at the Fred Hardy Invitational over the weekend. Once again, the meet displayed how hard the team has been working and that as a whole, the squad is improving every week. There were 10 personal records, four new MEAC qualifiers, and three event winners. "The team is beginning to expect greatness so expectations are getting high," head coach Marc Harrison said. The personal records are as follows: Daniel Stokes in the hammer throw, Rikkia McGill in the hammer throw, Uchechi Onuoha in the 400 hurdles, Oluchi Ike in the 400 hurdles, Enyioha Ike-Amaechi in the 400 hurdles, Sydney Benson in the 800 meter, Mohammed Bah in the 800 meter, Jasmine Hardy in the 800 meter, Olujimi Scott in the 400 meter dash, and Korey Lombard in the 200 meter dash.

As for the new MEAC qualifiers, Mi-Ah Watkins qualified in the hammer throw, Daniel Stokes in the hammer throw, Michelle Cole in the 400 meter dash and Milan Bullock in the high jump. Event winners include Olujimi Scott in the 400 meter dash, Uchechi Onuoha in the 400 hurdles, and the women's 4x400 meter relay team, who also qualified for ECAC's. In an impressive display of speed and strength, Scott was only .01 seconds away from breaking the 400 meter dash outdoor record. When asked about his performance, he said, "I didn't execute my race as well as I had liked to. Coach K has the plan, I just need to get it done." In addition, freshman Uchechi Onuoha dominated the 400 hurdles for her first individual collegiate victory and also helped her team win the 4x400 meter relay: "Coach Harrison and I had been talking new race strategies for my hurdles so I felt really confident, and as for the 4x4, it was great weather and I was really pleased with my time and how I ran the race."

Also, after returning from a year off due to injury, senior Rajae Gayle competed at an extremely competitive separate meet in North Carolina this weekend and returned with a No. 1 ranking in the MEAC in the javelin, sitting 10-plus meters ahead of the rest of the pack. As for next week, a group of the Bison will travel to Florida to compete at the Florida Relays. "It's going to be 90 degrees at the University of Florida next week, so we're expecting some huge PR's," Harrison said.
