WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University women's basketball team extended its home win streak to five games with a 75-57 victory over South Carolina State on Monday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium.
Howard is now 10-9 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 5-14 (2-6 MEAC).
Redshirt senior Te'Shya Heslip recorded her second straight double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds) and paired it with five assists and five steals. She was 8-of-14 from the floor, a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe and had nine of her rebounds on the defensive end.
The Bison had three more players in double figures, starting with senior Sydni Johnson, who had 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Rookie Sarah Edmond tallied 13 points in her 24 minutes on the court and redshirt junior Erin Blaine added 10 points.
Howard made 10 of its 19 three-point field goal attempts, just one shy of its season-high (11). The Bison also earned 18 assists on 27 baskets and scored 27 points off SCSU turnovers.
Howard came out of the gate tough on defense as it held SCSU scoreless over the opening 4:29 during six possessions and forced five turnovers. Although the Bison were getting the job done on the defensive end, they were having a hard time finding their rhythm on offense. At the 1:57 mark, HU was only up 9-4. The home team was able to limit the Lady Bulldogs to 18.2 percent (2-11) shooting, eight turnovers and six fouls for a 14-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
Midway through the second period, Howard had pushed its advantage to 24-12 after Heslip scored off a give-and-go with junior Tajzhane Dopson. With 2:55 on the clock, the Bison had 13 points off of SCSU's 12 turnovers. Edmond connected from beyond the arc to extend HU's lead to 37-25 going into the break.
The Lady Bulldogs came back from halftime recharged as they went on a 20-9 run over 7:15 to pull within one, 46-45. Freshman Star Fitzgerald-Greer hit a jumper, Heslip went coast-to-coast and Johnson sank a three-pointer to move the score to 53-46. SCSU responded with a three to close the quarter, 53-49.
With 5:33 remaining in the game, Howard had managed to get out to a 64-55 lead thanks in part to seven points from Heslip. The Bison took its largest lead of the game, 75-55, after layups by Edmond and Johnson. Over the final 3:31 of the game, Howard outscored SCSU by a 15-2 margin. HU also held the Lady Bulldogs to just eight points in the fourth quarter for the final score, 75-57.
The Bison will hit the road to take on Florida A&M on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
