Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Williams Leads Balanced Attack In Win Over Shenandoah

Washington, DC---Charles "CJ" Williams poured in a career-high 29 points to lead four players in double figures as Howard pulled away to a 77-66 win over Shenandoah in a non-conference game in Burr Gymnasium, The win snapped a three-game losing for the Bison (2-8) and gave them their second win of the season.

A 6-5 freshman from Richmond, VA, Williams tallied 18 of his points in the first 20 minutes on a variety of shots.  He was 10 of from the field. His previous high was 27 against George Washington.

"CJ is a born scorer," said Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry.  "He and Dalique (Mingo) helped us when we were struggling to score.  With our current situation with injuries, we need to have three consistent scorers if we are to be successful."

Mingo, a 6-0 junior who normally serves a reserve, has been forced to start at point guard and he has shown improvement each game.  In addition to his 16 points, 10 coming in the first half, he added a career-high 6 assists and grabbed six rebounds.

Despite the combined scoring efforts of the duo, the Bison only led, 37-34 at the half on the strength of Jonah Meredith's 11 points.

Howard threatened to put the game away at the start of the second half, but the pesky Hornets (5-4) refused to go away as they used the three ball to stay within striking distance.  Kaimonne Douglas (11 second half points) and Malcolm Clark (9 points) combined for 20 points.

So Howard again turned to Williams down the stretch as he scored 11 points before fouling out while Kofi Andoh contributed an important 10 points, all coming in the second half when the Bison were able to pull away.  The 6-4 senior also grabbed seven rebounds.

"That is a good basketball team," said Nickelberry of Shenandoah.  "They would not quit.  We got a good effort from Kofi, Mingo and CJ on a night when Solo (Solomon Mangham did not have one of his better games."  Mangham, the team's second leading scorer, finished with 11 points but he also grabbed 11 rebounds for a double double.

NEXT UP: Howard will try to win two in a row for the first time this season when it hosts Central Penn on Sunday at 6 pm.
