BIRMINGHAM, AL --- Howard Women's Soccer student-athletes
Kela Gray and
Whitney White were selected as the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league announced this afternoon. The accolades give the Bison two of the first three weekly awards of the season for the SWAC.
Gray, a sophomore forward and transfer from TCU, leads the Bison in points (11) and goals (4) and is tied for the team lead in assists (3) after Howard's 1-1 opening weekend. She was part of Howard's record-setting 17-0 performance against Hampton on August 23, scoring a game-high four goals (on eight shots) and adding two assists. She opened her Howard career with an assist in the Bison's 4-2 loss to Radford on August 21.
White, a sophomore forward/midfielder, was the only Howard player to score in each of the team's first two games. She helped lead a Bison backend that pitched a shutout against Hampton, only allowing the Pirates to attempt one shot in the game.
